18 - 26 March 2017 at The Barn, Rosny Farm, Hobart
as part of the 2017 Ten Days on the Island festival

Returning Lives is a series of oil and ink paintings by the Hobart-based Chinese-Australian artist Chen Ping, presented with a hand-drawn short animation film by Shanghai animator Zeng Yi Gang, inspired by Chen Ping's paintings and accompanied by a new percussion score by the French composer Gabriel Collet, reflecting upon both the paintings and the animation. The score, which accompanied the animation screenings, was performed live by Gabriel and the Polish musician Elwira Slazak. This three-way collaboration between Hobart, Shanghai and Warsaw is part of our Creative Futures initiative, which we established in 2005 to encourage intercultural engagement between artists & producers from Australia & China. Earlier this year, we produced a 7-city, 9-concert China tour for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, with the orchestra performing in Jiangsu & Fujian Provinces and Shanghai, including a joint New Year's Eve concert in Nanjing with the Jiangsu Symphony Orchestra and a concert of contemporary Australian & Chinese music at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music's He Luting Concert Hall, which was recorded and broadcast by Shanghai Radio's 94.7FM, the first time an Australian orchestra has had a China concert broadcast. This was also the second China tour that we have created for the TSO - the first was in 1998, when we arranged concerts in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Shanghai & Beijing, including a joint concert with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra in the Beijing Concert Hall.
